The misunderstanding stemmed from the relay interpretation process of Modi’s original Hindi phrase, which described Takaichi as “my sister.” An official English translation rendered the term as “my younger sister.” However, during the subsequent translation from English to Japanese, the phrase was inaccurately conveyed as “beautiful sister.” This misinterpretation was then echoed by Takaichi, who believed the translation to be correct and publicly embraced the notion of a brother-sister relationship with Modi.
Japanese representatives have since explained that the error was a result of the complex nature of simultaneous relay interpretation, which involves multiple language translations in real-time. Despite the slip, officials have assured that the incident has not impacted the diplomatic relations between Japan and India.
