Vietnam Pursues Japanese Partnership for Advanced Tech and Innovation Growth

by admin477351

Vietnam is seeking to enhance its collaboration with Japan in key technological areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy, while also aiming for increased support in workforce development. This initiative was a focal point during a meeting on September 3 between Vietnamese science and technology officials and members of Japan’s House of Representatives. The discussions centered on advancing semiconductor research, AI, energy technologies, and personnel training, alongside fostering closer ties between businesses in strategic technology sectors.

Through the NEXUS joint research program, both nations are aiming to co-fund semiconductor research that spans chip design, advanced materials, supporting technologies, and manufacturing processes. Looking to the future, Vietnam and Japan plan to deepen this collaboration significantly from 2027 onwards. Additionally, Vietnam is keen on receiving Japan’s assistance in developing sovereign AI capabilities and Vietnamese-language large language models. An upcoming joint working group between the two countries is set to convene in October, focusing on advancing technology transfer and fortifying business connections within the semiconductor industry.

Vietnam has proposed transforming the NEXUS initiative into an annual cooperation mechanism, while also broadening the scope of research to include AI, new materials, renewable energy, and biomedicine. The country is advocating for stronger business partnerships and enhanced training programs for highly skilled engineers and experts across strategic technology fields. Japan has shown interest in Vietnam’s semiconductor development efforts, labor policies, and its long-term energy strategy, which encompasses plans to expand nuclear power capabilities.

In terms of energy, Vietnam is committed to pursuing a diversified mix, incorporating conventional energy sources, renewables, and nuclear power, with ongoing research into small modular reactors. The transition to a sustainable energy future will necessitate significant investment and the cultivation of a highly skilled workforce. Vietnam has expressed its hope that Japan will continue to be a pivotal partner in developing the necessary energy infrastructure to support its burgeoning high-tech industries.
