Asian stock markets showed mixed results on Monday amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and economic concerns. The announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump of a potential deal to purchase Russian diesel has kept Brent crude oil prices steady above $104 per barrel, even as it sparked criticism from U.S. lawmakers.
President Trump revealed plans for an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure an initial supply of over 300,000 tonnes of diesel, with additional shipments anticipated. This move aims to ease fuel prices but is controversial due to ongoing efforts to curb Russia’s energy revenues amid its conflict with Ukraine. A bipartisan group of senators has urged the administration to reconsider the decision.
In the Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi dropped 3.7% to 6,384.24, and Shanghai’s Composite Index fell 0.4% to 3,797.24. Conversely, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng increased by 0.3% to 24,271.20 and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose by 0.8% to 8,783.20. India’s Sensex declined by 0.8%, while Tokyo’s markets were closed for a holiday. In Europe, indices such as Germany’s DAX, France’s CAC 40, and the UK’s FTSE 100 saw modest gains.
Oil prices remain volatile amid uncertainties surrounding global energy supplies. Brent crude inched up 0.1% to $104.76 per barrel, while U.S. benchmark crude fell 0.4% to $91.50. The situation is further complicated by reports of continued attacks on energy infrastructure, despite Trump’s claim that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an energy ceasefire.
Meanwhile, U.S. consumers are facing renewed inflation concerns, with a University of Michigan survey indicating expectations of inflation reaching 4.7% over the next year, slightly up from the previous month’s forecast. Investors are also keeping an eye on upcoming U.S. inflation and retail sales data, along with corporate earnings reports, as indicators of economic resilience in the face of elevated living costs and market uncertainty.
