Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently concluded a productive four-day visit to Japan, where he emphasized the growing interest among Japanese businesses to enhance their investments and technological partnerships with India. Accompanied by a sizable business delegation of nearly 200 representatives, Goyal engaged with Japanese companies spanning diverse sectors, including robotics, semiconductors, electronics, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.
The visit yielded promising discussions, with potential investment opportunities already surfacing. Notably, a Japanese robotics firm identified an Indian partner, expressing intentions to invest and explore the possibility of manufacturing robots within India. This development highlights the tangible outcomes of the visit and the mutual interest in fostering manufacturing collaborations.
A pivotal aspect of Goyal’s agenda was to augment the presence of Japanese companies in India. Currently, approximately 1,500 Japanese enterprises operate in the country, but India is keen on amplifying Japanese investments, particularly in emerging industries. This effort is part of a broader strategy to deepen economic ties and leverage Japan’s expertise in various technological domains.
During the visit, both nations initiated talks to review the India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. These discussions are aimed at addressing regulatory challenges and identifying opportunities for enhanced business-to-business cooperation. The ongoing dialogue underscores the commitment of India and Japan to strengthen their economic linkages and overcome existing barriers to trade and investment.
Looking ahead, India and Japan have set ambitious targets to bolster their trade and investment relationship. With bilateral trade projected to reach $27.47 billion in the fiscal year 2025-26, the two countries have set a long-term goal of achieving $50 billion by 2030. This vision reflects the shared aspiration to create a robust and dynamic economic partnership that benefits both nations.
