Smoking, in particular, remains the top preventable cause of cancer worldwide, being strongly linked to not just lung cancer but also cancers of the mouth, throat, bladder, kidney, pancreas, and esophagus. Moreover, non-smokers exposed to passive smoke face an increased risk of lung cancer. Encouragingly, quitting smoking can rapidly decrease cancer risk, with substantial benefits materializing within a few years.

Obesity is identified as another major risk factor, associated with various cancers, including those of the breast, colon, kidney, endometrium, and esophagus. Excessive body fat may lead to inflammation and hormonal changes that foster tumor growth. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and cabbage contain compounds that could bolster the body’s natural defense mechanisms. Lesser-known risk factors highlighted by doctors include excessive sun exposure, the use of tanning beds, poor sleep and disrupted sleep cycles, long-term night-shift work, and exposure to harmful environmental substances like radon gas.

Health professionals stress that preventing cancer does not necessitate drastic overnight changes. Instead, they advocate for small, consistent lifestyle improvements. These include quitting smoking, reducing the consumption of processed foods and alcohol, maintaining regular physical activity, protecting the skin from excessive sun exposure, and ensuring proper sleep. Such measures could significantly reduce long-term cancer risk. Additionally, regular health screenings and medical check-ups are crucial for early detection and prevention.
