Amid rising tensions, China has imposed new export controls on 40 Japanese entities, accusing them of aiding Japan’s military expansion and efforts towards “remilitarization.” These measures target 20 Japanese companies and their divisions, including those affiliated with major firms, by restricting the sale of certain dual-use goods. These goods, which have both civilian and military applications, can no longer be exported to these entities without adhering to the new limitations.
Additionally, another set of 20 Japanese organizations has been placed on a watch list, which mandates exporters to obtain special approvals. This includes conducting risk assessments and ensuring that the products will not be used for military purposes. China justifies this move as necessary to counter Japan’s perceived military growth, expressing particular concern over Japan’s bolstered defense capabilities and its increasing security collaborations with other nations.
The Japanese government has responded critically to China’s new export controls, labeling them as unacceptable. Tokyo has called for the withdrawal of these measures and announced plans to evaluate the potential impact, considering suitable countermeasures. These developments come as relations between the two neighboring countries experience strain, especially following Japan’s efforts to expand its defense strategy, including capabilities for long-range weaponry.
China has consistently expressed opposition to Japan’s security policies, particularly those related to Taiwan, which has been a contentious issue.
