Apple’s anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market with a foldable iPhone could mark a significant turning point for this industry segment, according to analysts. The move is expected to revitalize a market that experienced a decline, with global foldable smartphone shipments dropping by 8% in the first half of 2026. However, research firms remain optimistic about a rebound, forecasting total shipments to reach approximately 23 million units by the year’s end and continued growth into 2027.
Analysts are confident that Apple will quickly secure a substantial portion of the foldable smartphone market upon the release of its first device. Smart Analytics Global predicts that Apple’s market share could hit 25% of global foldable shipments by the end of 2026 and increase to around 41% in 2027. This potential dominance could reshape the competitive landscape, posing a challenge to current leaders such as Samsung, Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
Despite the promising outlook, the introduction of Apple’s foldable iPhone might face initial hurdles. Complexities in manufacturing could lead to supply constraints, while the device’s projected price of over $2,000 might limit its early demand and availability. Consequently, Apple may choose to initially launch in select markets before expanding its reach globally.
Industry forecasts from IDC suggest that Apple’s presence in the foldable market could transform it into one of the fastest-growing segments in the smartphone industry. The research firm estimates that Apple could ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, potentially capturing 40% of the global market. IDC also projects overall foldable smartphone shipments to reach 22.9 million units in 2026, marking a 12.6% increase, and about 27 million units in 2027, reflecting an 18% growth.
Reports indicate that Apple’s initial foldable iPhone model may include features such as a 5.5-inch cover display, a 7.8-inch foldable main display, Touch ID, an advanced A20 Pro chip based on a 2-nanometer process, and dual 48-megapixel cameras. If Apple can successfully navigate manufacturing challenges and address pricing concerns, its entry could significantly invigorate the foldable smartphone category and quickly establish the company as a formidable competitor.
