The United States has unveiled tariffs that could reach as high as 100% on certain drone imports, as part of an effort to bolster national security and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. This new policy specifically targets unmanned aircraft systems, focusing on larger drones over 25 kilograms and those equipped with capabilities relevant to national security, like thermal cameras and docking stations. These targeted drones will face a 100% tariff, while smaller drones will incur a 25% tariff.
Additionally, the US is extending tariffs to drone products and components from several key trading partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subject to a 15% tariff, whereas products from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff, contingent upon the origin of the hardware, software, and technology from these nations or the US. Most of these tariffs are set to be implemented on September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures are designed to fortify the US defense and industrial base, promote domestic drone production, and create jobs within the country. This initiative aims to reduce the US’s dependency on foreign suppliers. Presently, China dominates the global drone market, with DJI, a Shenzhen-based company, holding a substantial portion of the US commercial drone sector. DJI has previously faced US restrictions due to concerns about national security.
US officials have expressed concerns that drones manufactured abroad could pose risks related to surveillance, sensitive data collection, and potential attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has also previously advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks.
This development arises amid ongoing trade and technology disputes between Washington and Beijing. In response, China has implemented its own set of restrictions affecting drone exports to the US and has taken actions against several American firms.
